Which iPhones Hold Their Value? UK Trade-In Prices vs Launch Price

How much of its price does an iPhone keep? We compared what we pay today for every iPhone from the iPhone 13 onwards with what each model cost new in the UK. The short answer: an iPhone loses about half its value in its first year, then roughly ten percentage points every year after that.

The headline numbers

  • One year old (iPhone 17 range): keeps 46–54% of its launch price.
  • Two years old (iPhone 16 range): about 41%.
  • Three years old (iPhone 15 range): about 32%.
  • Four years old (iPhone 14 range): about 21%.
  • Five years old (iPhone 13 range): about 19%.

Every model compared

"We pay" is our current price for a fully working phone in good condition with the base storage, the same storage as the launch price. Prices were taken on 3 October 2026.

What the data shows

The first year is the biggest drop

Even the newest iPhones are worth only about half their launch price once a new range arrives. After that, values fall more slowly and more evenly, at roughly ten percentage points a year.

Standard models hold value as well as Pro models

In percentage terms the standard iPhone 17 has kept the most of its price (54%), ahead of the 17 Pro Max (51%). Pro models still fetch more money in pounds, but you do not lose a bigger share by buying the cheaper phone.

Plus, Air and "e" models lose value faster

The iPhone 17 Air (46%), the iPhone 16 Plus (38%) and the iPhone 16e (37%) sit below the rest of their ranges. Demand for second-hand phones follows the models most people buy new.

Older phones still have value

A five-year-old iPhone 13 Pro Max is still worth around £215 in good condition, and we buy cracked and faulty iPhones too. A phone in a drawer loses value every month it stays there.

When is the best time to sell?

Values step down when Apple launches a new range each September, so selling just before launch day gets you the most. If you have already upgraded, sell the old phone straight away rather than keeping it as a spare.

How we worked this out

Launch prices are Apple's UK prices for each model's base storage at release. "We pay today" is Gadget Recycle's live quote for that model and storage in good working condition. Higher storage, damage and faults change the price, so get an exact quote for your iPhone or see our trade-in value guide for every model.
